Can I Gift a Kindle eBook?

As the festive season approaches I have been asked if people can gift 'Merdeka' as a Kindle eBook to those that they know have a Kindle (or a Kindle App) and might have an interest in reading it.  That depends:  Outside the US Store (Amazon.com) it is not possible to directly gift an eBook and so Gift Certificates have to be used.  I'll tackle in reverse order:

If you are using Amazon.co.uk (or any other Amazon store apart from Amazon.com) you cannot directly gift a Kindle eBook.  Instead you have to buy a Gift Certificate and email it to the person concerned.  Then send them a follow up email with the link to the Kindle eBook that you think that they might like (for 'Merdeka' the link is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Merdeka-ebook/dp/B006FMFCHI/).  When they click to buy the eBook they will be able to redeem their Gift Certificate and use the proceeds to buy the book.  As 'Merdeka' is only £1.91 in the UK store, if you choose to gift more than that, they will be able to continue shopping in the Kindle Store with the remainder of their credit.

If you are using Amazon.com most Kindle books available for purchase in the Kindle Store can be given as a gift to anyone with an e-mail address. You do not need a Kindle device to send or receive Kindle book gifts, and the recipient can read their gift on a registered Kindle device or any free Kindle reading application.  For more advice visit the page 'Giving and Receiving Kindle Book Gifts'.
